Marketing Material for Alcuin Book Design Awards

InDesign/ Illustrator, 2023

Overview: The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada celebrates outstanding achievements in book design. For this project, I was responsible for creating promotional materials including posters, postcards, and social media ads. The primary challenge was to design a layout that featured award-winning book covers without making the poster appear crowded or hard to read.

Objective: To design visually appealing and easy-to-read promotional materials that highlight the award-winning book covers while maintaining a clear focal point and organized layout.

Solution: To avoid a crowded appearance, I angled the images of the book covers slightly, ensuring they didn't immediately read as text. I used a dark green background to mute the colors of the book covers, allowing the design elements to stand out. An orangish color was chosen for the title to create a focal point and evoke the essence of fall, while touches of blue were added for visual interest.

Design Approach:

  • Angled Book Covers: Positioned the book cover images at slight angles to prevent the layout from becoming too text-heavy and visually crowded.

  • Dark Green Background: Utilized a dark green background to mute the book covers' colors, reducing visual clutter and enhancing readability.

  • Focal Point Creation: Employed an orangish color for the title to draw attention and create a focal point, with added blue accents for a balanced and interesting composition.

Outcome: The final design was well-received for its distinctive and navigable layout. The promotional materials stood out from other posters around the city, effectively capturing attention and highlighting the excellence of the award-winning book designs.
